What it is

RACI maps tasks against people, marking each as Responsible (does the work), Accountable (owns the outcome — only one), Consulted (gives input) or Informed (kept updated).

When to use it

  • Starting a project or process with several people involved.
  • When work is slipping or being duplicated.
  • Handovers between teams.

How to use it

  1. 1List the tasks. Put each key task or deliverable in a row.
  2. 2List the people/roles. Put each person or role in a column.
  3. 3Assign R, A, C, I. For each task, mark who is Responsible, Accountable, Consulted and Informed.
  4. 4Check the rules. Exactly one Accountable per task; avoid too many Responsible; not everyone needs to be Consulted.

Frequently asked questions

Can there be two people Accountable?

No — a core RACI rule is exactly one Accountable per task, so ownership is never ambiguous.

What is the difference between Responsible and Accountable?

Responsible does the work; Accountable owns the outcome and answers for it.
