What it is

A3 is a structured, one-page problem-solving method. The template guides you left-to-right through the logic of the problem so anyone can follow your reasoning at a glance.

When to use it

• A specific, bounded problem you need to solve properly rather than firefight.
• When you want a shareable, evidence-based case for a change.
• To coach someone in disciplined problem solving.

How to use it

1. 1Set the background. State why this problem matters to the business and the customer.
2. 2Describe the current condition. Show what is happening now, with data — not opinions.
3. 3Set the target. Define what "good" looks like and by when.
4. 4Find the root cause. Use the 5 Whys or a fishbone to get past symptoms.
5. 5Choose countermeasures. Pick changes that address the root cause, not the symptom.
6. 6Plan and follow up. Assign who does what by when, and how you will confirm it worked.
