What it is
A3 is a structured, one-page problem-solving method. The template guides you left-to-right through the logic of the problem so anyone can follow your reasoning at a glance.
When to use it
- A specific, bounded problem you need to solve properly rather than firefight.
- When you want a shareable, evidence-based case for a change.
- To coach someone in disciplined problem solving.
How to use it
- 1Set the background. State why this problem matters to the business and the customer.
- 2Describe the current condition. Show what is happening now, with data — not opinions.
- 3Set the target. Define what "good" looks like and by when.
- 4Find the root cause. Use the 5 Whys or a fishbone to get past symptoms.
- 5Choose countermeasures. Pick changes that address the root cause, not the symptom.
- 6Plan and follow up. Assign who does what by when, and how you will confirm it worked.
